India will be holding elections over the course of one month from 16 April.
BBC News asked people from all corners of the world's largest democracy what they would do if they were prime minister.
DR PK JOSE, NGO WORKER, BHUBANESWAR, ORISSA
If I were prime minister of India I would ensure there's people-centred development based on justice, equity, and democratic principles.I would provide support to farmers and help transform agriculture into a more lucrative venture. I would make rural India an attractive place to live. That would reduce population and pollution in urban centres.
There would be substantial investment on services such as education and healthcare.
I would cut down spending on defence by settling border disputes and curbing religious fundamentalism and extremism.
