India will be holding elections over the course of one month from 16 April.
BBC News asked people from all corners of the world's largest democracy what they would do if they were prime minister.
ZINNIA BRAHMA, STUDENT AND MODEL, ASSAM
If I were prime minister I would modernise Indian cities by improving their amenities, cleaning up garbage and making land use more efficient. At the same time I would make sure Indian cities don't turn into concrete jungles by retaining the traditional architecture. In everything I do, there would be a blend of tradition and modernity.
I would tackle Pakistan in a tough way: I'd force them to be tough on the terror groups who are trying to destabilise us and to compel their army to fight the Taleban.
Or else, I would like my country to join the US's effort in fighting terrorism, regardless of what people on the left might say. This is an issue that calls for a tough decision and I would take it.
I would put a lot of effort into tackling poverty, especially in rural areas. I would crack down on corruption at all levels because it is crippling the system.
