India will be holding elections over the course of one month from 16 April.
BBC News asked people from all corners of the world's largest democracy what they would do if they were prime minister.
U GOSWAMI, SOCIAL SCIENCTIST, GUWAHATI, ASSAM
Given the nature of Indian politics, I don't think that as a prime minister I would have the kind of powers needed to make sweeping changes.
I don't think I would have the freedom to cleanse the system, given that the government is full of crooked politicians.
But if as a prime minister I could enjoy unfettered decision-making powers, I would begin by banning criminal elements from governance.
I would give more powers to the electorate, like the right to recall representatives, for instance.
Each region of the country should have ample representation in the central government and each state should be invested with true federal powers.
Solving the conflicts in north-east India will not be possible otherwise. These and other conflicts should be resolved through dialogue, not military repression.
I would also make it compulsory for those in power to be educated.
