If I were prime minister: Renu Pathak

India will be holding elections over the course of one month from 16 April.

BBC News asked people from all corners of the world's largest democracy what they would do if they were prime minister.

RENU PATHAK, UNIVERSITY LECTURER, NOIDA

Renu Pathak
What would I do if I became prime minister? That's a tough question. I've never seen myself in that light ever.

A lot will depend on what I can do rather than what I want to do.

And that in turn depends on which party I belong to and how stable is my government.

I would work to make sure our government is responsible. It's very important that we tackle bureaucracy and ensure more accountability.

There is a need for judicial reforms and reforms in education too.

With the global recession, India needs a government that can take tough decisions. No one denies that regional, caste-based parties do articulate regional aspirations and that by itself helps equity and balance.

But are local issues more important than national ones? It's a tough choice for the voter.
