India will be holding elections over the course of one month from 16 April. BBC News asked people from all corners of the world's largest democracy what they would do if they were prime minister.
POTTURU V RANGANAYAKULU, TRADITIONAL MEDICINE PROFESSOR, TIRUPATI
If I became the prime minister of India, my first priority would be solid waste recycling. India is producing thousands of tonnes of solid waste strewn across the entire Indian landscape. I see villages, towns and cities squatting on the garbage. This garbage is making millions of Indians sick. I would spend money to collect and recycle the garbage in every district. This will contribute a great deal to the Indian economy. If solid waste management is effective, India will become more beautiful, healthy and charming. I want to see a clean and healthy India. Along with this I would try to limit the number of stray animals in our streets. Every year in our town thousands of people are attacked and wounded by street dogs and many road accidents happen because of cows on the roads. I would solve this problem by confining all the animals to animal houses. I would also work on improving public transport, so that people wouldn't need to spend money on cars. This measure will reduce congestion, bring down pollution and increase health and happiness.
