Ahead of celebrations to mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, the BBC News Website asked a range of Chinese people what their country had achieved and where it will be in another six decades.
Tony Liu, 33, textile salesman, Jiangsu Province
I was born in 1976 and I've seen great changes in the past 30 years. Really great changes! People used to starve. Chicken and pork was only eaten on Chinese New Year. Now we can eat meat every day. We have electric goods and cars. Our lives are so much better and they will get much better in the future. Society has become more civilised. When I was a little boy we never obeyed the traffic lights. We would throw rubbish from the windows. Now such things rarely happen. Pollution is a serious problem in China. I think China sacrificed its environment in order to achieve economic development. I haven't seen blue sky and stars at night in the past 10 years. I am afraid that if everybody in China starts living like in the US, we'll destroy the earth. I hope there'll be green energy resources to minimise our impact on our planet. When China becomes a developed country, it will be just like a Western country, where people don't only care about their food and immediate needs. We should care about the starving people of the world. I hope that in another 60 years China will be peaceful, rich and prosperous. Then we'll be able to contribute towards peace and development elsewhere in the world.
