Newly released files from the National Archives reveal that the distinguished American film director Sam Wanamaker was recommended for internment by MI5 in the 1950s for his supposed Communist sympathies.
Mr Wanamaker, who was instrumental in rebuilding Shakespeare's Globe theatre in London, had been a member of the Communist Party in the US.
That involvement meant MI5 took an interest in him when he moved to Britain.
