Michael Aspel's evacuation memories

More than 2000 people have gathered at St Paul's Cathedral in London to remember the day when, as children, many of them left their towns and cities for the relative safety of the countryside at the beginning of World War II.

Some 3.5m people, the vast majority of them children, were evacuated between 1939 and 1945.

The broadcaster Michael Aspel was among those gathered at St. Paul's and told the BBC he 'settled into a very free and wild life' as an evacuee in Somerset.
