The changing shape of dogs

Selective breeding of dogs can affect an animal�s quality of life. For example, the bulldog�s large head makes birthing difficult and 90% are born by Caesarean. Flat faces make them prone to breathing disorders.

The Basset Hound�s long ears can easily be injured. Its droopy eyes and floppy mouth may look cute but are prone to infection. Short legs limit movement and can lead to back and joint problems.

The original German Dachshund was larger than the modern variety with longer legs. Today�s short-legged breed tends to suffer from knee and also spinal problems because of its long back and short rib cage.

The Bull Terrier�s curved muzzle has become a desirable feature for some. While head shape does not pose a health risk, incestuous breeding can increase the likelihood of inherited diseases such as deafness.
