Top teachers have been honoured at a star-studded ceremony dubbed the 'Oscars' of the profession.

Screen legend Lord Attenborough, film star Bill Nighy and pop queen Javine were among those presenting prizes to the 10 winners of Teaching Awards 2004.

Among them was Sue Seifert, head teacher of Montem Primary School, Islington, north London, who won the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Screened on BBC2, the annual awards - for England, Wales and Northern Ireland - celebrate excellence in teaching.

A teacher since 1970 and a head teacher for the last 25 years, Ms Seifert has helped hundreds at the inner-city primary school which she leads.

Inspirational

"She is such an extraordinary person that words fail us to do her full justice," the awards panel said.

"Through her we have seen what can be achieved through dedication, hard work, determination, love and a clear vision of what a school should be, must be, and, in this case, clearly is."

Education Secretary Charles Clarke congratulated the winners at the London ceremony.

"It is right that we recognise the hard work of teachers and teaching assistants in raising standards and inspiring our children to fulfil their potential," he said.

"This is the sixth year of the Teaching Awards and it is a testament to the profession that each year there are more and more outstanding nominees."

The awards are open to every school in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Staff must be nominated by members of the school community.
