Biggs' son fights to stay in UK
Michael Biggs says only he can understand his father
The son of Great Train Robber Ronnie Biggs has argued that a decision refusing him permission to stay indefinitely in Britain with his sick father is "inhumane".
Michael Biggs launched a fresh appeal against the ruling at a Immigration Appeals Tribunal on Wednesday. It is based on Article 8 of the Human Rights Act, the so-called "right to family life". The move comes after the 27-year-old was told by the Immigration Adjudicator in December that the Home Office had not broken human rights laws by turning down his request. 'Precarious' Michael Biggs, who is a Brazilian citizen, says he must be allowed to remain because nobody else can understand his sick father. He has claimed the 72-year-old, who is being treated in Belmarsh Prison following his return to Britain last May, can only speak in a series of grunts. He arrived in Britain with his father when he decided to end his exile in Brazil. At the tribunal, Michael Biggs was asked why he could not return to Brazil and apply for a multiple entry visa.
He said: "My father still can't speak or eat, he is being fed by a tube. "My father is dying in jail, is it asking too much for me to stay?" Ronnie Biggs escaped from Wandsworth Prison in 1965 and was on the run for 35 years. The infamous villain's health has been described as "precarious", having suffered a number of strokes since his arrival. In January he heard his 30-year sentence would not be referred back to the Appeal Court, despite lawyers' claims he only played a minor part in the �2.6m robbery.
