Bromsgrove factory closes down
Marchers carried a coffin through Bromsgrove
Redundant workers have marched through Bromsgrove, West Midlands carrying a coffin to mark the closure of a major car components manufacturer.
Almost 500 people are to lose their jobs when United Engineering Forgings (UEF) shuts on Thursday. Union conveyor, Mick Ball, who has worked at UEF for 33 years, said the prospects for those being laid off are not good. "Probably two-thirds of the workforce are 50-plus and will be very, very lucky to find employment.
"I think probably out of the whole 481 people we've got about 35, 36 people who have secured work as yet." The firm was bought five years ago by the business side of Prudential Ventures insurance company. It went into receivership last June. Mr Ball said the closure would have a "ripple effect across Bromsgrove that will not be fully felt for the next 12 months. "It has always been a cornerstone of Bromsgrove." The factory, which used to be known as Garringtons, opened in 1947. It supplied parts such as axels and crankshafts to Rover and Jaguar and to car manufacturers in the US and France.
