From Tulsa to Lincoln City FC

Singer Gene Pitney has come to the help of cash-strapped Lincoln City Football Club - thanks to fan Lynda Nixon.
For Ms Nixon cheekily sent the singer an e-mail asking him to sign up to the lowly club's buy a seat scheme. She got the idea after looking up from her desk at the club and seeing the posters she had put up of her favourite singer. And generous Gene replied saying he would sign up to have 10 seats at the club's Sincil Bank ground named after him. Hit parade The US singer, who had hits with 24 Hours From Tulsa and Something's Gotten Hold of My Heart, is one of thousands of fans whose names will appear on seats at the ground. It is a scheme which the club hopes will solve its financial woes after it went into administration earlier this month.
"I sat back and thought 'who do I know?', and I have got pictures of Gene Pitney all over my office and I thought I'd contact him. "He said he would happily buy ten and the fact he has done it is brilliant of him." At �10 each, the seats will have set Gene back �100. 'Grave situation' The singer spoke to BBC Lincolnshire about his support for the club, which finished 89th out of 92 professional clubs in England this season. "When Lynda told me how important a football team is to a city like Lincoln it made me realise the gravity of the situation. "I think it would be great if I could come and see Lincoln City play, especially if I can sit in my own seat." The seat naming scheme has so far raised more than �75,000 for the club. |
