Pilot scheme to protect countryside
Dartmoor
Areas like Dartmoor attract visitors to the region
The South West has been chosen to pilot an experimental scheme to give the countryside better care and protection.

A new group has been formed to lobby for extra money, share expertise and improve marketing.

The South West Protected Landscapes Forum is made up of the region's National Parks and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONBs).

The project is being funded by the Countryside Agency and it will run initially for three years.

Holiday spending

It is thought to be the first time in England that such a broad range of environmental groups have been brought together to act as one.

"We have already started a closer relationship with the AONBs," said Rob Steemson of Dartmoor National Park Authority.

"We've had meetings with them and we are talking about training initiatives, funding and good practice," he said.

The new organisation will complement the region's other trademark attractions like the Jurassic Coast and the South West Coast Path.

Malcolm Bell, chief executive of South West Tourism, welcomed the move.

"One thing the West Country is famous for is its environment," he said.

Other regions

"Research done with the National Trust showed that over 75% of the people who come to the South West come because of the environment.

"And the areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and National Parks are at the top of the tree," he said.

If the project is a success in the South West it could be extended to other regions.

The launch of the scheme comes as English Tourism Council's figures show holiday spending in the South West has reached record levels.

The number of visitors this year has risen by nearly a quarter, with some attractions reporting an 80% rise in takings.
