A traditional Christmas Day dip in the North Sea which was cancelled because of high insurance cover, is back on organisers said on Friday.

An insurance company has now offered to cover the event at Lowestoft in Suffolk for �230.

One of the organisers, teacher Lawrence Chapman, 33, said: "The swim was cancelled because 'compensation culture' put insurance premiums too high to cover the once a year event.

"The swim has gone without incident for 24 years and we will be supported once again by lifeguards and first aiders."

Large crowds

Insurance firms had previously not been able to offer organisers a low rate for a one-off event.

The 25th charity event, which raises thousands of pounds every year for local good causes, was expected to attract 250 swimmers willing to brave the cold of the North Sea.

Thousands of people turn out to watch the spectacle.
