Landscape East would see a bridge of reeds built over the A14

The winners are: a steel sculpture at Dunwich in Suffolk, a coastal project in Norfolk, a bridge of reeds in Cambridge, and a movable bridge.

They will share �250,000 in funding for feasibility studies.

The landmarks were submitted under a scheme by the East of England Development Agency (EEDA) and were voted on by the public.

The winners were selected by a judging panel chaired by Anthea Case, former chief executive for the Heritage Lottery Fund.

She said: "The winning ideas demonstrated that they have the potential to be major landmarks that the people of the East of England could be really proud of.

Winning entries Steel sculptures to mark the site of the lost city of Dunwich - by Anne Niemann and Johannes Ingrisch East Reef, a proposal to replenish and protect an area of the Norfolk coast - by Agnieszka Glowacka, Eleanor Rennie and Arup Landscape East, a bridge of reeds over the A14 at Cambridge - by the National Trust, Greater Cambridge Partnership, Marshall Group and Landscape Design Associates Watermarking, a movable bridge for events and riverside performances throughout the region - by Urban Initiatives

"It was impossible to choose between them."

Richard Ellis, chairman of the EEDA, said the a public exhibition planned for this autumn would highlight the "huge range" of entries received by the panel.

The competition was open to anyone with the ability to develop and deliver an icon representing the region to the rest of the world.

Organisers hope a landmark for the east will become as well-known as the Angel of the North and stimulate growth along with regional pride and unity.
