Rise in domestic violence arrests
A tougher stance by Northumbria Police on domestic abuse has led to a rise in arrests for the offence.

The force ran the "End the Silence Campaign" throughout December and January, promising to charge more suspected abusers.

There were 1,462 arrests, compared to 1,235 arrests in the same period last year - an increase of 227.

Meanwhile the force said the number of crimes recorded as domestic abuse increased from 719 to 1,154.

Hard line

Figures for the number of suspects charged during the period are not yet available.

Despite the campaign encouraging victims to call police, the number of reports of domestic abuse incidents fell from 4,691 to 4,679 when compared to the same period last year.

Chief Constable Mike Craik promised to continue the hard line despite the end of the campaign.

He said: "It's clear that our new approach to domestic abusers, to lock them up and put them before the courts, has been adopted wholeheartedly by frontline officers."
