Jean Ritchie inherited �9m

Jane Ritchie, 58, tried to build an industrial learning centre 15 years ago, but could not raise enough cash.

But when a 100-year-old cousin left her �9m, she decided to use some of it to build the centre in Newton Aycliffe.

Ms Ritchie reacted on an idea for her to spend the cash on a round-the-world trip by saying "how horrible".

Ms Ritchie set up the Elm House Trust, which will oversee the construction and administration of the centre.

Cruise trip

She said: "The first thing that went through my head when I heard I had all this cash was that we could now build the industrial learning centre.

"I am a very great believer in doing the first thing that comes into your head.

"Originally, 15 years ago, the centre was going to support maths, science and technology because, as a careers officer, I believed these were important for youngsters in the real world.

"Now, the education system is rather different, and there is a need for youngsters to learn about learning in a more practical and applied way.

"So we are going to offer simulated work experience and a whole range of work-related activities."

The facility, which will be used by local schools, is expected to open in September next year.

Ms Ritchie said that her cousin had hinted that she spend the money on a round-the-world cruise.

But the former Durham County Council worker said: "How horrible. I really can't think of anything worse."
