New probe into 1991 disappearance
Dinah McNicol
Cash was withdrawn from Dinah McNicol's account
A fresh inquiry into the disappearance of a teenager 16 years ago has been launched by police in Essex.

Dinah McNicol was 18 when she failed to return to her home in Tillingham, Essex, after a trip to a music festival in Hampshire in August 1991.

She was last seen in a car with a man after hitching a lift, but the vehicle and the driver were never traced.

Police hope advances in technology and a renewed appeal might help officers find out what happened to Ms McNicol.

Ms McNicol joined friends at the festival in Liphook, Hampshire, on 3 August 1991.

Cash withdrawals

She stayed an extra day with a man she had met.

On 5 August the pair hitched lifts to their respective homes and were taken to a petrol station on the A3 where they were then picked up by a man in a car.

Her friend was dropped off at junction 8 of the M25 near Reigate, and the driver then continued his journey alone with Ms McNicol. She was not seen again.

At the time of her disappearance, regular withdrawals of cash were made from her building society account at cash points in Hampshire and Sussex.

She had about 2,000 in her account but the withdrawals were out of character.

Det Supt Tim Wills said: "No family should have to live so many years not knowing what has happened to someone they love."

He appealed for anyone who remembered the disappearance and had any useful information to come forward.

Officers also want to hear from close friends who can recall specific items of jewellery, bags, purses or clothing that Ms McNicol always had with her.
