Lakes restoration plan for Broads

The lakes of the Broads will be restored under the 20-year plan

Plans for the restoration of the lakes on the Norfolk and Suffolk Broads have been unveiled.

The Broads Authority said the Lake Restoration Strategy had been put together to show which of the 64 Broads had recovery potential.

Broads, separate from the main river system which can retain a freshwater habitat despite climate change, will be restored under the plans.

Andrea Kelly, of the Broads Authority, described it as a "long-term project".

Work under the scheme includes mud pumping to remove nutrients and increase depth at Trinity Broads and Norton's Broad.

Ms Kelly said the Broads Authority had been working on lake restoration work with its partners for 20 years.

"As a result the water quality on the Broads is steadily improving but it is a long-term project and there's still a lot more work to be done.

"The strategy helps us focus on lakes with the highest possibility of success."

She added: "As well as restoring the lakes, the authority, Natural England and the Environment Agency are working with farmers to lower the amount of sediment entering the Broads."
