The A66 on the Cumbria Durham border was badly hit

Cumbria has escaped predicted heavy snowfalls, which were feared would bring a second day of commuter chaos and school closures.
On Monday, 143 schools were forced to close as several inches of snow fell across the county.
But on Tuesday just eight were reported closed, with Cumbria County Council saying it was up to individual schools to decide whether they stayed open.
The main A66 between Brough and the A1 in County Durham has re-opened.
A spokesman for Cumbria County Council said all roads have now re-opened, except the B6259 at Nateby, near Kirkby Stephen which is due to re-open on Wednesday.
Some services on the West Coast Main Line could still be subject to delays, according to Virgin Trains, which is running a restricted timetable.
