Dame Kelly said perseverance was the key to her success

Double Olympic gold medallist Dame Kelly Holmes has been awarded an honorary degree.

Holmes, who won both the 800 and 1500 metres at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, collected the accolade from Brunel University in west London on Monday.

The Kent-born athlete, 39, who was made a Dame in 2005, said not giving up was the key to her success.

"If you get knocked down seven times, get back up because on the eighth attempt, you might succeed," she said.

Dame Kelly was recently named as the new president of Commonwealth Games England.

After her retirement in 2005, she has focused on mentoring young athletes.

Former Brunel student and Olympic heptathlete Kelly Sotherton was also awarded an honorary master's degree by the university.
