A man from Luton has tested positive for swine flu, making it the first confirmed case in Bedfordshire. The director of public health at NHS Luton, Gerry Taylor, said the patient was showing mild symptoms and has been given anti-viral medication. The man was said to be recovering well at home. Ms Taylor said the first case was not unexpected given the increase in cases throughout the UK. Last week the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared a global flu pandemic. Ms Taylor added that the case "does not indicate a need to change the way we are currently responding to swine flu". "We have robust plans in place to contain and tackle the virus and we will continue to monitor the situation closely," she said. Anyone who has flu-like symptoms and has recently returned from swine flu-affected countries is being advised to stay at home and phone their doctor.
