The junction at Chieveley is one of the country's busiest
A major 5m maintenance scheme to strengthen motorway supports at a notorious transport bottleneck will not cause major disruption, officials say.

The project will repair and strengthen the columns of the M4 where it passes over the A34 at the Chieveley Interchange in Berkshire.

Traffic will divert via an alternative route - the new A34 underpass.

A 40mph speed limit will be imposed around the work, and one lane of the carriageway will be closed.

The work begins on Monday, and is expected to be completed by February 2007.

Steve Cobb, Highways Agency project manager, said: "We have already tested the traffic management at this site, and although it is a major maintenance scheme we expect the disruption to drivers to be minimal.

"The work to the columns is essential to ensure they continue to remain in line with current standards and continue to carry out the job of supporting the M4."
