M4 bridge plan set for rejection
Controversial plans for a new bridge over the M4 look set to be rejected at a planning meeting on Wednesday.

Reading University owns much of the land around the village of Shinfield, and had proposed a bypass around the village and a bridge over the motorway.

The university says it would move up to 75% of traffic away from the village and prove a boost to the environment.

But campaigners against the plans have said the village could not handle the knock-on effects of the development.

The University would undertake that there would be no further development for at least ten years

They say they fear major housing developments could follow if the bypass is agreed.

Wokingham's MP John Redwood said: "Villagers feel a huge amount of development is being thrown at Shinfield in a way that completely destroys the character of the village."

A university spokesperson said: "The scheme represents a major environmental improvement for Shinfield.

"It would draw a robust eastern boundary for Shinfield, acknowledging existing topographical and planning constraints.

"The University would undertake that there would be no further development for at least ten years between the eastern edge of the village and the new relief road."

Wokingham District Council's planning officers have recommended the scheme is turned down at Wednesday night's planning meeting.
