'Toad patrol' volunteers needed
Volunteers are needed to help hundreds of frisky toads get safely across a busy road to their breeding grounds.

Every year the amphibians wake from hibernation in late February and migrate to Summerleaze Lake in Maidenhead, Berkshire, to spawn.

Unfortunately part of their route crosses the busy Ray Mill Road East.

The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead is looking for volunteers to join "toad patrols" to stop them being squashed by cars.

A council spokeswoman said: "This 'explosion' of toads takes place at the end of February and beginning of March.

"The Royal Borough's countryside service is calling for volunteers to help collect and count toads and take them across the road in the evenings."
