The Womad Festival used to attract 40,000 people to Reading

Reading will host a major new music event following the loss of the Womad Festival two years ago.

Womad attracted 40,000 people a year to the town before it left for a new site in Wiltshire.

Councillors voted on Monday evening to commit to the two-day Heavenly Planet Festival for the next three years.

The event, aimed at families and young festival-goers will take place on the site of the Reading Festival and is scheduled for 10 and 11 July 2009.

The council said it hoped about 15,000 people would attend in the first year, with this figure rising as it became established.
