Schools closed in snow disruption

Heavy snowfall has caused disruption across West Yorkshire with more than 420 of the county's schools shut.

Leeds Bradford Airport was closed for a time with a number of departing and arriving flights being cancelled, before it reopened.

Ten East Coast Main Line rail services between London King's Cross and Leeds were also cancelled.

Refuse collection services across Leeds were suspended over safety concerns, the city council said.

A spokesman added: "Instead, street cleaning and refuse collection staff will be switched on to gritting and snow clearing duties, supporting the work of their colleagues the highways team."

Ambulance cancellations

Many bus services across the county have been delayed or cancelled, with most buses only sticking to major roads.

Extra flights have been put on at Leeds Bradford Airport to alleviate issues caused by the bad weather and people are being advised to check in as normal.

Yorkshire Ambulance Service cancelled journeys for patients due to attend routine appointments at hospital clinics.

A spokesman said it expected the service would also be cancelled on Wednesday because of the adverse weather conditions.

He added that the service was still operating for patients with urgent medical needs including renal and oncology treatments.

The Met Office has issued a severe weather warning for heavy snowfall and icy roads across Yorkshire. Further snow is forecast for Wednesday.
