An army cadet officer has been awarded an OBE in the New Year Honours.
Acting Colonel Andrew Flint works with nearly 700 cadets, taking them on military camps and raising thousands of pounds for local charities.
"I am very surprised but also glad that the work of the Army Cadet Force has been recognised," said Colonel Flint.
"I always enjoy working with the young people, they make it all worthwhile."
The academic world is represented by Bristol University's Emeritus Professor John Enderby who becomes a knight bachelor for services to science and technology and Professor Stephen Bann, who is a awarded a CBE for services to art history.
Revenue worker
Dr John Taylor of Stoke Bishop, the director general of the research councils, is also knighted for services to scientific research.
The head teacher of the Castle School in Thornbury, Adrian Verwoert, becomes a CBE and John Burke of Bishop Sutton, near Bristol is awarded an OBE for community services.
Ronald Hiles of Moorend becomes a CBE for medical services to the community in Bangladesh, while John Pontin of Chew Magna, near Bristol, is awarded an OBE for his charity work.
Aerospace worker Derek Wilding also receives an OBE, for services to the industry, while Rugby World Cup kicking coach Dave Alred, from Stoke Bishop, is awarded an MBE.
An MBE is also awarded to Inland Revenue worker John Amos of Hanham and to Hyacinth Hall of Bishopston for community services.
Eric Maxwell of Downend is also awarded an MBE for his charity work.
