Uni students sign asylum petition
Wali and Azim Ansari
The brothers fled the Taliban in Afghanistan
Students at Oxford University have signed a petition to help asylum seeker Azim Ansari stay in the UK.

Mr Ansari, 18, who studied in Bristol before winning a place at Oxford, fled Afghanistan in 2001 and was granted extended leave to stay until 2003.

A further extension was rejected by the Home Office and the teenager faces deportation if his appeal later in December is refused.

The 2,000-name petition is due to be handed to Oxford MP Dr Evan Harris.

Mr Ansari fled the Taliban with his brother Wali in 2001.

During his time in the UK, he gained two As and a B in physics, maths and computing at the City of Bristol College.

Mr Ansari has now completed his first term at Oxford and told BBC News that the petition could help him.

He said: "It does show people's support, which I think is important."

The appeal hearing is scheduled for 22 December.
