New academy plans for city school
A new academy school for Bristol is being considered by the City Council.

The authority is looking at bringing in a private sponsor for the Portway School in Shirehampton, although it says it is a "long way" from doing so.

Under the government's high profile scheme to turn schools around, it adds about 25m for new buildings to each 2m donation from a sponsor.

The sponsor is given wide-ranging freedoms on how the school, independent but publicly-funded, is run.

Merchant Venturers

The City Academy is already up and running in Bristol.

And a new academy for the Withywood area is being planned to open in 2007.

It is being sponsored by the Society of Merchant Venturers.

The City Council would not comment further until all plans were finalised, although it did say no new sponsor was yet in place.

At Portway, 27% of all pupils got five or more GCSEs grade A* to C in 2006, up from 21% in 2005.

The school has recently been re-built under the Private Finance Initiative.
