A group of students in Bristol is threatening legal action against a clamping company after about 40 cars were clamped near their college.

The students, from Filton College, ended up paying �130 each to have their cars released and claim that the company had not put up enough signs.

Bristol Security Group said it took on the contract on behalf of residents who were fed up with "selfish parking".

Clamping has been suspended while the company meets residents.

'Twisted round'

Blase Miller, a tourism student at Filton College, said: "When the signs are twisted round and ripped down, you just can't see them.

"One was completely twisted round and the clamper even said to me that he had to come back down and twist them back round. They have even added them during my lessons."

A spokesman for Bristol Security Group said: "The company only recently took on the contract for College Way and it was done on behalf of the residents who live there.

"The company put up plenty of signs and waited 48 hours before it started clamping.

"The company sympathises with the students and is going to talk to the Residents Association and the land owners, George Wimpey. Until then clamping operations have been suspended."

Rob Miles, who lives in College Way, said: "Emergency services can't get down here - ambulances or fire engines.

"The dustbins are often not emptied because the students park selfishly - all over the roads and so something needs to be done."
