Royal Mail 'will not seal boxes'

The Royal Mail has denied it has plans to seal postboxes in Bristol after the Communication Workers Union (CWU) claimed the action was likely.

The union said boxes could be sealed to ease the backlog of undelivered post.

"In depots across the region there are mountains of undelivered mail - more than one million items in Bristol alone," said Dave Wilshire of the CWU.

In a statement, the Royal Mail said: "We have absolutely no plans to seal any postboxes in the Bristol area."

The union has been involved in a long-running dispute over pay and conditions.

The Royal Mail said: "We have contingency arrangements in place, including the use of managers to minimise the impact of the industrial action and to return service to normal as quickly as possible.

"More than 90% of our people are working normally delivering mail today across the country - and we are again urging the CWU to stop hurting customers and to call off their strikes and provide customers with the service they need and expect from Royal Mail."
