Debt-crisis trust boss to start
Royal Cornwall Hospital
The new chief executive will join the trust from November
A start date has been set for the new chief executive to take charge of the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust.

John Watkinson, formerly chief executive of Bromley NHS Trust, replaces Brian Milstead who resigned in June over the trust's 31m debt.

Non-executive trust members Rob Yates and Elizabeth-Ann Maldon also stepped down amid criticism of the deficit.

Mr Watkinson will spend one day a week in the job from November before going full time from 1 January 2007.

Management criticised

Two teams of financial experts said funding was handled incompetently at the trust.

In September, an independent auditor said he found a lack of proper budget management and control at the trust.

His report backed up the findings of accountants Price Waterhouse Coopers, which said the deficit had been made worse by the board and managers.

The trust is to cut 300 jobs to try to stem the overspend.
