Job loss task force is expanded
China clay pit
Imerys is the largest employer in Cornwall
A task force set up to help china clay workers in Cornwall facing redundancy is also to help civilian staff from an RAF base who are to be made redundant.

The area is facing the loss of more than 1,000 jobs in 2007, with 600 posts being cut at Imerys and 500 at St Mawgan when the MoD pulls out.

An area action force has been working to assist the clay workers.

Its role is being expanded to help people and businesses who rely on the RAF base.

The action force involves union leaders, councils and the South West Regional Development Agency.

The task force said it was working to find developments which would create new jobs.

Leaflets will be distributed to employees of Imerys and St Mawgan outlining initiatives being taken to ease their plight.

Advice sessions will be arranged and appeals made to the government for special assistance.

Imerys is cutting posts because it is moving its paper coating operations to Brazil where costs are lower.

The job cuts at RAF St Mawgan are an effect of MoD plans to mothball the site by October 2007.

The base's search and rescue force is to move to RAF Valley in north Wales.
