Truro Library will be holding a Cornish language taster day, where people can learn a few words and phrases.

There are thought to be up to 400 fluent Cornish speakers in the county, with thousands more who know at least some words of the language.

The session, which includes quizzes and children's activities, will take place on Saturday 1 March.

'Feel inspired'

Elizabeth Stewart, Cornish Language partnership administrator, said "Cornish is all around us but sometimes people are not sure where to go to learn more about their native language.

"If they feel inspired, we'll be able to point them in the direction of further learning opportunities to suit them."

Cornish, or Kernewek, is the sister language of Welsh and Breton, but it almost died out in the late 19th Century.

However, interest in the language later increased and in 2002 it was formally recognised under Part II of the Council of Europe's Charter for Regional or Minority Languages.
