Unitary voters told to register

The Register of Electors is updated yearly

People in Cornwall who want to vote for the new unitary authority are being told to ensure their names are on the official Register of Electors.

The new unitary authority will take over Cornwall's district councils and the existing county council next April.

Every home in the county will get a voter registration form from their current district council in September.

Electoral law means councils must send out forms every year to record people eligible to vote at each address.

Register published

Registration forms have to be replied to by law. This can be done by post, freephone, the internet or via a text message registration line.

The county's annual register of electors will be published on 1 December.

The unitary authority will be responsible for roads and education, as well as leisure, environmental health and housing.

Cornwall County Council said the status could eventually save taxpayers about �17m a year
