Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett has urged the Japanese media to do more to help catch a man suspected of murdering English teacher Lindsay Ann Hawker.

The 22-year-old's body was found in a bathtub filled with sand on the balcony of a Tokyo apartment in March.

Tatsuya Ichihashi, 28, who lived at the apartment, is suspected of killing Miss Hawker, from Brandon, Warwickshire.

At a press conference in Tokyo, Mrs Beckett said she was making the request on behalf of Miss Hawker's parents.

She said: "I hope no one will mind if I say the family wishes to ask the Japanese news media if you can give a little more coverage to this terrible and sad case in a hope that it will help to bring any perpetrator to justice."

She said she had told Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Aso she appreciated the efforts of the police to find Mr Ichihashi.

Mr Ichihashi has not been seen since he fled from his apartment when police went there to question him.

Japanese police have released photographs and video footage of the suspect and his picture can be seen at police stations throughout Tokyo.

Post-mortem test results suggested Lindsay, who was a student at Leeds University, was strangled or asphyxiated. She had also suffered severe injuries to her face and arms.
