Chinese New Year celebrations have been cancelled in Coventry city centre because of the economic downturn, organisers have claimed.
The event in Lower Precinct usually includes lion dancers, singing, food stalls and parades but organisers said they could not finance it in 2009.
City centre management firm CV One has contributed towards the costs of holding the celebrations in the past.
Coventry Community Chinese Association said it could not afford it on its own.
The Chinese New Year falls on 26 January in 2009, according to the Gregorian calendar, and is measured by cycles of the moon.
In the Chinese calendar 2009 is the Year of the Ox and is officially called Ji Chou.
