EU legislation aims to preserve water habitats

Leading environmental officials are meeting in the Lake District to examine the impact of EU legislation on the area's lakes, rivers and wetlands.
The Lake District Still Waters Partnership meets in Windermere on Friday for its third annual meeting.
They will examine EU directives to conserve freshwater habitats.
These include reducing pollution, restoring damaged sites, promoting sustainable water use and mitigation damage from floods and droughts.
The EU Water Framework Directive is set to be the main mechanism for improving freshwater habitats for the next 10 years.
