Plans to merge two Carlisle secondary schools could result in the creation of a city academy, say education chiefs.
It had been proposed that struggling Morton School should close and re-open under a new name, working together with Caldew School.
Cumbria County Council said that once Morton is ready to function on its own again it could become a city academy.
Proposals have already been put forward for another academy on the site of St Aidan's School in Carlisle.
The move to merge Morton and Caldew schools is part of scheme to get the former out of special measures through partnership.
Councillor Philip Chappelhow, cabinet member for children and young people, said the plans for Morton had been revised to include an academy after further consultation with the government.
