Engineers working on a major road link between England and Scotland have begun one of their most difficult tasks.
A stretch of the A74 between Carlisle and Guards Mill, known as the Cumberland Gap, is being upgraded in a �175m project.
The first of 136, 35-tonne beams for a viaduct carrying the new road over the West Coast Railway Line is being craned into position on Sunday.
The job is described as "challenging" because it is next to a live rail line.
Once the new bridge is complete the existing one will be demolished.
John Hornagold, Highways Agency project team leader, said: "Building the viaduct is a challenging job as it is close to a live railway line, and its creation will be a tribute to the skills of the engineers."
