Council approves Riverlights
Bus station
The saga has lasted six years
Controversial plans to redevelop Derby's bus station have been approved.

The city council approved the 83m Riverlights project at a meeting on Thursday night, despite opposition from thousands of people.

However the Secretary of State will have the final say.

The saga of the bus station redevelopment has dragged on for the last six years.

Councillors approved plans for the project which involves ripping down the current 1930s bus station in the Morledge and building a new one along with shops, bars, offices and flats.

The decision comes despite a long running campaign to save the art deco building.

A petition opposing the project was signed by 15,000 people.

Derby business leaders said they welcomed a decision on the development one way or another.
