Police tackle reports of racism
Police say they are taking steps to deal with racism being directed at ethnic minorities in a Derbyshire town.

Some Asian shopkeepers working in Cotmanhay near Ilkeston say they have been victims of racist abuse and crime.

It is a predominantly white area and officers are now taking action to get children of different ethnic groups to integrate and socialise.

They are holding a multi-racial football tournament at Ilkeston Town Football Club on Thursday.

'Perfect group'

It is hoped this will encourage young people to be more accepting.

Pc Andy Bircumshaw from Derbyshire Police said it could be a vital part of their education.

He said: "We certainly have a very small proportion of ethnic minority people living in the Erewash area as it is.

"I know for a fact that there are very few kids from ethnic minorities at either of the schools in Cotmanhay.

"We thought the year 7 pupils, the 11 to 12-year-olds, would be the perfect group to work with."
