Asbestos disposal given go-ahead
A company is being allowed to dispose of thousands of tons of asbestos waste on a site in South Derbyshire.

More than 80 nearby residents had objected - but developers say it will be far less dangerous than transporting it across the country by road.

Engineering firm Roger Bullivant is gradually demolishing the former Drakelow power station.

It wants to store asbestos waste from the cooling towers under the old turbine hall 500 metres away.

The six cooling towers have asbestos lining, creating around 30,000 tons of waste, which is currently taken by road to a special landfill site on Tyneside.

The former power station is next to the engineering company's own site near Burton.

85 people living nearby objected - but county council planners, who have imposed a range of safety and environmental conditions, say it is the best option.
