Parent protest on school closure
Stoney Middleton school
The school has only half of its allocated number of pupils
Campaigners have handed more than 9,000 letters to Derbyshire County Council objecting to the closure of a North Derbyshire school.

Parents said the closure of the Stoney Middleton Primary will mean children would have to walk along the busy A623 to get to another school.

A county council spokesperson said it is costing too much to educate each child at the school.

Council officials will meet campaigners to discuss the plans on Thursday.

The school has 21 pupils but has places for 47.

The council said it costs 5,678 each year to educate every pupil at the school - more than double the county average of 2,640.

Campaigners said there are a lot of spare places at schools all over the county and "to pick" on the small village's school was "unfair".
