A man in his 20s is in a serious condition in hospital after being shot in a Derby suburb.

Officers said the man had been at a party at Harvey Road, Allenton, and it is thought he was shot in the front garden of a property at about 0630 BST.

He was dropped off at the Derbyshire Royal Infirmary with a wound to his leg, at about 0700 BST.

His injuries were described as serious but not life-threatening. Extra police patrols have been set up in the area.

The scene has been cordoned off while police carry out examinations.

Det Ch Insp Rachel Walker said: "We have not been able to speak fully to the man yet but it would seem he was attending a party early this morning and was shot.

"We are keen to hear from anyone who was at the party or anyone who lives in the area who may have heard or seen anything which could help our investigation."
