M&S reveals plans to expand store
Demolition in Plymouth
Demolition has already started in the city for the 170m scheme
A major retail chain has announced it is to almost double the size of its Plymouth store.

The move by Marks and Spencer is tied in with 170m redevelopment plans for the city's Drake Circus area which started in January.

M&S plans to keep its existing building in Plymouth, but expand the shop by 90%, to nearly 80,000 sq ft.

The premises will be extended outwards and upwards with the current building being revamped at the same time.

There would also be a bridge linking the shop to the car park and mall area of the new Drake Circus complex.

Work is scheduled to begin next year and be complete by late 2006.

The shop would remain open throughout and number of new jobs would also be created.

The company behind the Drake Circus scheme, P&O Developments, says there has been a high level of interest from other retailers about occupying units within the new centre.

Some of those are shops already in Plymouth and others would be new to the city.
