Ship workers secure Hoon meeting
Appledore Shipbuilders in Devon
More than 500 people lost their jobs at the yard in September
Union leaders from Devon will lobby the defence secretary on Tuesday in an effort to secure the long-term future of a north Devon shipyard.

Last year more than 500 people working at Appledore shipbuilders lost their jobs when the receivers were called in.

The yard was bought by the firm which runs Devonport Dockyard, DML, and it has been trying to secure new orders.

GMB Members are gathering for a conference which will look at the Royal Navy' shipbuilding programme.

Early decision

Union members from Appledore have secured a meeting with Geoff Hoon, when they will explain the shipyard's difficult position.

The yard is keen to secure orders for new Castle Class vessels which are to replace patrol vessels based in the Falklands.

But there has been speculation that those orders could be delayed.

At Tuesday's meeting in Scarborough, union leaders will stress the importance of the work to north Devon and emphasise the need for an early decision.
