25,000 applications for housing
Council houses
Housing associations often own the properties applied for
Councils across Devon are dealing with more than 25,000 applications from people hoping to be housed.

It is hoped that a number of schemes to provide affordable housing will help to reduce numbers over the next 12 months.

Nearly 4,500 households are waiting in the East Devon district alone for accommodation out of a total population of 112,000 people.

In the West Devon district, there are just over 1,000 applications out of a population of 50,000 people.

Applications pending

About 2,500 households are on that list in the North Devon District Council area, just over 1,100 in Mid Devon, and 1,212 in Torridge.

Exeter City Council has about 3,000 applications pending.

In the south, of the 81,000 people in the South Hams District Council authority area, 1,800 applications are waiting for accommodation. That figure in Torbay is 1,774.

In Plymouth, about 7,000 applications have been made for housing to Plymouth City Council out of a total population of 241,000.

Those people hoping to be housed by their local council apply by registering on the waiting list. Then, depending on availability, they are given accommodation - often through a local housing association.
